Do I have to move everything to a new calendar?
No. FimFam reads and writes the calendar already on your phone. There is no FimFam calendar to migrate to, and nothing is kept in two places.
Which calendars does it work with?
Whichever accounts your phone's own calendar is already set up with — Google, iCloud, or both. Each parent keeps the one they use.
What if the other parent uses a different calendar app?
The to-dos live inside the event's own description, not in a separate list. They travel with the event, whoever edits it and whichever app opens it.
